Hertz has more than a century in the Rent-a-Car industry. It was September of 1918, when Walter L. Jacobs at the age of 22 established a rent-a-car company in Chicago. Starting with a dozen Ford Model Ts, which he repaired and painted himself, Jacobs quickly expanded the business, and in 1923, only five years later, he was making more than 1 million dollars a year. It was that year, 1923, when Jacobs sold his business to John Hertz, who was the president of the Yellow Cab and Yellow Truck and Coach Manufacturing Company. Jacobs remained with the company as a senior executive. Three years later in 1926, the Hertz Drive-Ur-Self System, passed to General Motors. Today is owned by three of the largest private capital investment companies.
